Ian Wong is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Esophageal and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery within the Department of Surgery at The University of Hong Kong. He has received valuable post-fellowship training at Northwestern University in Chicago, USA, and Seoul National University in South Korea. With a primary focus on foregut diseases, Ian’s research work centers around surgical oncology and the multidisciplinary treatment of esophageal cancer. Notably, he has made significant contributions to publications that explore the refinement of esophagectomy techniques, the utilization of preoperative chemotherapy and chemoradiation, outcome prediction methodologies, and the application of fluorescence-guided surgery. Ian also demonstrates a keen interest in the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophageal motility disorders.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Ian actively engages in professional organizations and scholarly publications. He currently serves as a council member of the Young ISDE Committee under the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, as well as an editorial board member of the Journal of Thoracic Disease and the Annals of Translational Medicine. Furthermore, his recent endeavors have led him to explore surgical innovation, including the integration of artificial intelligence in endoscopy, the development of endoscopic robots, and the application of near-infrared II imaging techniques.
