Biography: Mohamed Rela

Professor Mohamed Rela is a world-renowned liver transplant surgeon and was the Professor of Liver Surgery at the prestigious King’s College Hospital, London where he spent nearly three decades. He is the Chairman and Managing Director of Rela Hospital, Chennai, India, which performs more than 300 liver transplants per year, including 100 paediatric transplants. He has pioneered various liver transplantation techniques at King’s College Hospital London including auxiliary liver transplantation, split liver transplantation, and living donor liver transplantation. Professor Rela has successfully performed over 4500 liver transplants in his career spanning 3 decades making his way into the Guinness Book of Records for performing successful liver transplantation of a 5-day old baby. He has been recognised by ’Top Masters in Healthcare Administration’ as one of the 20 Most Innovative Paediatric Surgeons Alive in the World Today, and is the Ex-President of the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS), and the current president of the Liver Transplantation Society of India (LTSI). He has authored over 600 peer-reviewed publications and a number of book chapters including a chapter in the latest edition of Gray’s Anatomy.
