Professor Dhananjaya Sharma is Head, Department of Surgery NSCB Government Medical College Jabalpur (MP) India. As an academic surgeon, in addition to his clinical and operative work load, he takes pride in teaching and mentoring UG and PG trainees. His publications include 2 books, 17 book chapters and 342 indexed publications.
He is a lifelong activist and campaigner for “appropriate technology for health- care in developing world” and ~ half his 342 publications are on Global Surgery/ low-cost surgical solutions to achieve health equity for underserved populations. He consider himself truly blessed to be able to “make a difference” and do God’s work, even though he doesn’t wear a Priest’s collar.
He has been honoured with PhD, DSc, Honorary Fellowships of Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand, Académie Nationale de Chirurgie France and International College of Laparoscopic Surgeons; and Ad Eundem Fellowships of all four Royal College of Surgeons of Scotland, Ireland and England. Other honours include Honorary Visiting Professorships/ Invited Guest Faculty for teaching courses in 29 developed and developing countries.
He feels that the key to Global Surgery is not only innovations for low-cost surgery but also collaborative internationalism; because ‘Global means together’. In the evening of his career, he lives contentedly with the spiritual rewards of “Noblesse oblige” and shares his philosophy:
“Attitudes are more important than abilities;
Character is more important than cleverness”
