Biography: Leanne Ashrafian

Dr Leanne Ashrafian is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Trust and Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) at King’s College London. She specialises in robotic and minimal access Thoracic Surgery and is recognised for her work on the growth and incorporation of novel technology into the specialty. She is a clinical academic with over 100 peer reviewed publications and has authored a number of books and book chapters, including within the world renowned ‘Bailey and Love’s Short Practice of Surgery’. Her work encompasses a broad portfolio of research interests ranging from meta-analysis and evidence synthesis to epigenetics, metabolomics and translational clinical trials. Her collaborations across the wider surgical community have offered new insights into patient care, particularly during the recent coronavirus pandemic where she successfully established a national collaborative to optimise patient pathways and outcomes. Dr Ashrafian holds an Honorary Lectureship position at Imperial College London where she actively teaches both at undergraduate and post graduate level. Her work has also led to a number of national and international engagement and leadership positions. These include Thoracic Senior Editor for the online global Cardiothoracic Community CTSNet, and membership of both the Thoracic Committee for the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (SCTS) and the Rare Thoracic tumours committee for the International Association for Lung Cancer (IASLC).
