Biography: Mark Coleman

Mark is a general surgeon in Plymouth, SW England and an Associate Professor at the University of Plymouth. He specialises in colorectal and laparoscopic surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and a Member of the Associations of Coloproctology and Laparoscopic Surgeons of England and Ireland. 

He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of Edinburgh. He holds several honorary fellowships and memberships of international medical societies.  

He was National Clinical Lead for the Lapco Programme to retrain surgeons in laparoscopic colorectal surgery from 2008-2014. He now helps to train and advise surgeons, companies and other professional groups from over 100 countries all over the world (www.lapcointernational.co.uk).

He has multiple publications in scientific journals and books (http://tinyurl.com/mark-coleman-publications). He contributes a book chapter to the world-renowned surgical textbook Bailey & Love. He is the co-author and editor of the textbook the Lapco Manual. The main areas of his work concern surgical training and how to improve it. 

He is Chair of the charity Bowel Cancer West (www.bowelcancerwest.com), and is the recent ex-Chair of the National joint Advisory Group for GI Endoscopy in the UK.  Mark grew up in South Africa and England, studied Medicine at the University of Leicester and obtained a Doctorate in 2002, also at the University of Leicester, for his thesis entitled ‘Genomic Instability in Colorectal Cancer’.
